Brown army collection for more than a decade. The collection currently contains 25,000 digital objects, with additional artwork being added all the time. Over the years, there have been memorable moments of discovery in the digitization process. I'm always especially intrigued when a box of photos from this collection arrives in the department. Old cans, daguerreotypes and carte d'visites offer a clear and detailed window into the past, and I open these boxes with more enjoyment and anticipation than most. As I went through the material in the French Photo Box, I was fascinated to find in my possession twelve original sepia views of aging members of Napoleon's army in their original uniforms and insignia. I now know that the twelve Frenchmen are the oldest uniformed soldiers ever caught on film. The pride, vulgarity and intensity of the older men's postures and expressions, combined with the extravagant Napoleonic military clothing including bearskins, feathered fists, hats and Mamluk swords, make these images truly remarkable.

It is not known which studio the photographs were taken in, or who the photographer was, but the name of each veteran and his regiment is written on the back of each mounted image. They all wear the Order of Saint Helena, issued on 12 August 1857 to all veterans of the wars of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire, and it is possible that the men were in Paris the following year. Peter Harrington, curator of the military collection, has written a detailed blog about the twelve men in the photographs and provided a 2001 article he wrote entitled "Napoleon's Veterans".
