Timney Trigger Glock - Timney is known for their shotgun triggers, so when they first introduced the Alpha Competition Glock Trigger I was definitely interested. All the hype said it was like a single action but with a Glock twist. When I held it in my hand, that description was quite obvious.

Installing the Alpha trigger is quite simple. Everything you need comes in the box as you would expect. If you are not happy with the trigger fit, take it to a reputable gunsmith. A nice set of paper instructions is included. I like paper instructions. I can put them on my workbenches to look at, unlike online instructions. There are two differences in setting the trigger compared to the standard trigger. The first is the trigger receiver. This goes inside the trigger housing of the gun and locks in place with a screw. A second trigger return spring is also used. This is an "L" shaped spring located on the left side of the trigger. This spring style also allows the trigger to reset fully forward even if the striker is not reset.

Enough about installation, let's get to the trigger itself. Say goodbye to the factory plastic trigger, the Timney Alpha is made of anodized aluminum. The trigger shoe is flat and black anodized. It is also taped on each side of the face. This results in a very comfortable spur shoe feel. A slightly wider red anodized trigger guard is also a unique feature. As well as sticking out a bit more than some trigger guards, it is slightly curved outwards. Why? I'm not sure, but it doesn't seem to pinch my finger like the factory trigger does. Once depressed, it is still flush with the trigger shoe. To smooth it all out, it has a nickel-teflon coated trigger bar and spike.

The Timney Apha Competition Trigger is the best feeling, Glock style trigger I currently own. Trigger pull cuts at 3 pounds, consistently. And this with a "drop in" trigger. The initial rise is about 0.200”. This can be adjusted with the adjustment screw on top of the trigger. I modified it as internally as possible while still allowing the safety trigger to work properly. Then you come across this beautiful wall. Which then takes about 0.100" to pull through. Then about 0.075" over the non-adjustable stroke. The reset is very tactile. No mushy resets with the Alpha Competition trigger. So the feeling is - a climb, a wall, a sudden cut of the throttle, a little suspension, a reset. Because the striker is fully deflected back with the Timney trigger, so it has such a short trigger break. Basically, turning "safe operation" into safe "unified operation".

I have a full size Timney Polymer 80 with compensator and red dot. Perfect for this competition trigger, I would not recommend this trigger for a work gun or carry. But Timney specifically calls it a "competition" trigger, and that's probably why.

This Alpha Competition trigger shoots and feels great. I don't even notice the initial recoil when shooting the gun, it's so smooth. The 3lb pull and sharp tang allow for quick and accurate shot placement. Great reset gives me faster progression and lapse times. The trigger is pretty much everything I want in a competition trigger. My only complaint would be that the initial reception was too long. Other than that, this thing is a great trigger upgrade for your "Glock" style pistol.

Timney did a great job with the Alpha Competition Glock trigger. They basically reduced the single action style trigger for competitive use. The price is great at $150 for the trigger system. It has great features and will probably make your gun shooting great. I will definitely recommend the Timney trigger to anyone inquiring about upgrading a Glock competition trigger.

Drop In Glock Triggers: Apex, Overwatch, Timney Compared

I got this trigger and put it in my G19 and it was good enough that I felt I had to come here and write my first review. It breaks right at 3 pounds and feels much better than any of my other upgrade triggers. A very smooth and clean break. Installation is a little different than others but took me less than 5 minutes (tools included). This trigger is definitely the mod I will be using for all my builds from now on. 100% recommend. I started working in the gun industry with Glock triggers in the late 90's. I had a version that broke under 2 pounds using basic modified parts - except for the firing pin spring. Since then I have done over 1000 trigger jobs. Thanks to Timney, they're pretty much all gone now.

Glock opened their US offices in 1986. I'm surprised it took 35 years for someone to do what Timney did to change the trigger. It's one of those things where it's so easy to hit your head and say "why didn't I think of that?"

The Alpha trigger is available in two versions. One for 3rd and 4th generation Glocks and another version for 5th generation Glocks. The Gen 5 uses a completely different trigger rod, firing pin, firing pin guard, trigger return spring and trigger housing. As a result, Gen 5 pistols cannot use previous generation trigger parts.

On a factory Glock trigger, the firing pin is pulled back by the firing pin until it is released. The firing pin is an indented part and the surface that holds the firing pin is often quite rough. This is a key area to level and tune when doing trigger work. Sliding stamped steel over a nice, machined firing pin eye does not result in a nice smooth cut.

When you pull the trigger, you also compress the firing pin spring. One of the oldest ways to make a Glock trigger puller was to use an aftermarket striker pin spring. Many said they were unreliable; they can be if they are not installed correctly. When they're done right, they're right. I have over 100,000 rounds through various competition Glocks with a lighter firing pin spring with no misfire issues.

Trigger stock left and Alpha right. The Alpha does not touch the firing pin, so there is no cross on the trigger bar.

Timney got rid of all that with the Alpha trigger. An aluminum lever housing replaces the trigger return spring in the trigger housing. The eye of the firing pin is now engaged with the firing pin and all a trigger rod does is release the firing pin to send the firing pin flying. Now you have nicely machined surfaces that engage each other, and the pressure of the firing pin spring has a much smaller effect on the pressure of the trigger cut.

With all parts from the factory, you can expect a breaking weight of 3-3.5 pounds when using the Alpha trigger. Not only is it light, but it's also smoother and sharper with less bending and creep. Even when using the plus connector, I was still able to get the weight under 4 pounds. If you want to go lighter, you can easily do this by swapping out the dot or minus connector to go under 3 pounds.

Glock attachments. From left to right: minus, period, standard and plus. The angle has a big effect on the pull weight.

All of these weights come with the factory firing pin spring. This is a big selling point for the Alpha trigger. You no longer have to use a lighter firing pin spring to get under 3 lbs. Factory springs last longer and provide reliable firing in a wider range of ammo. For example, if you have slow reloads where the bits were not set all the way, they will probably still fire with the factory firing pin spring. You will get a clicker with a lighter firing pin spring.

I have been shooting both versions of the trigger for the past few months and have about 4000 rounds through the Gen 3 and 1000 through the Gen 5. This is where I discovered the downside of this new trigger.

Timney Trigger Glock

I shot my Gen 3 at the Steel Challenge in May and on the last step the trigger would not release the firing pin. It appeared to be an improperly adjusted overtravel limiter that would not allow the trigger to go all the way back and release the firing pin. Instead of trying to fix it to the clock, I cleaned the gun and left it as is so I could take it apart and try to figure out what happened.

Alpha Competition For Glock Large Frame

At the time of failure, my trigger had fired about 2500 rounds without cleaning. When it was knocked down, it appears that a small piece of debris (dirt, carbon particles, unburnt powder, etc.) got into the lever body and prevented it from firing.
